The Blindside show was reviewed by Mark Holsworth over at Melbourne Art and Culture Critic. Well, perhaps described instead of reviewed. Mark focused on the work attempting to mimic the way we see. Certainly, that was part of it – but for me the last few lines actually nailed the work:

And what is there to “Wonderland” aside from the technology and installation of a bigger picture? The subject matter of Christian tourists at a clichéd viewpoint above the city of Rio is less wonderland and more Disneyland.

The thing is, I’m not sure he even realised!

Remembrance of experience is at the core of WONDERLANDS Cristo Redentor.

Filmed from the same vantage point as so many other tourists, it deconstructs the single, linear time based image by presenting a fractured composite of minute long loops layered on top of one another. Each loop depicts a different level of detail of the site so that when composed there is no postcard view–just the idea of it.

In WONDERLANDS Cristo Redentor, time is folded and constantly reconfigured as the front most layer of video is forever dissolving into the background. This piece is a composition of many experiences from over an hour and a half.

The constant reconfiguring of the frames undermines our memory of it, yet instills a sense of what is there. Memory becomes an adhoc whole, composed of a myriad of fleeting moments and feelings, yet always tempered by our present experience.

For WONDERLANDS Cristo Redentor, the motivation is to reconstruct the site in a way that seems to be disintegrating so as to mimic our own inattention to the moment itself and therefore our desire to capture it forever, for later.

Currently in Paraguay and am going to have lunch with the country´s cultural minister, Ticio Escobar and then later will check out the Museo del Barro which he set up.

Tomorrow we will head to Iguazu where I will do some more filming in the wonder series.

Brazil was amazing. A brief accounts of the highlights will be written here soon. Spent some time with Nathan Gray in Salvador who is doing a residency at the beautiful Sacatar. In Rio we rubbed shoulders with Orlan while in Sao Paulo we were papped at many an exhibition opening – rather novel.

I also collected footage for new works in both Sao Paulo and Rio.

We all know that air travel is rather dull. Nikki and I had been looking forward to re-boarding the plane in NZ and knocking ourselves out with a couple of sleeping pills and waking up in Santiago. Then we saw Ricardo’s unmistakable black hoody with gold foil print all over it… The Walka crew were supposed to have been on yesterday’s plane, but a delay on the Melbourne – Auckland leg of their journey ensured that they missed their connecting flight in to Chile. After being offered an additional 22 hours of air time to fly via LA, they opted to spend a day in Auckland. Good choice.

So here we are, Claudia, Ricardo, Nikki and I, two rows apart and all feeling a whole lot happier about the next 13 or so hours ahead.

Big ups and thanks to dpwolf for his assistance in getting some of this site in order and to Nikki for the wicked graphics and cards. Still a way to go, but at least I have some things online now.
farewell Melbourne. Well, Melbourne in Winter at least (yes, I know, it is actually winter over there, but 27 degrees by day is kinda nice!)
